PART OF COLLAPSED STADIUM |
One person is reported to have died Thursday
May 12 2016 after the collapse of part of the Amadou Ahidjo stadium in Yaoundé.
Two people sustained injuries. The victims were not immediately identified.
The section which collapsed is said not
to be far from the presidential grandstand.
Witnesses are saying the death toll
may rise given that two persons are reported missing and buried in the rubble.
WORK UNDER PRESSURE |
The reasons for the collapse of part of the stadium constructed in 1972 are not yet known.
The stadium was undergoing some
rehabilitation work ahead of the African female football, AFCON 2016 and ahead
of the 2019 African cup of nations.
The government of Cameroon is
reportedly mounting pressure for belated works to be completed before November
2016, when the female football African cup of nations is due to begin.
